Garcinia Cambogia (Kudampuli): Uses and Tradition
Also known as Kudampuli, Malabar tamarind, Fish tamarind, Brindleberry, Gambooge · Garcinia gummi-gutta
Garcinia cambogia is kudampuli, the smoky, sour Malabar tamarind of Kerala fish curries. Here is what it is, how it is used and where it appears in our formulas.
Garcinia cambogia, known botanically as Garcinia gummi-gutta, is a small, pumpkin-shaped fruit that grows in the forests and home gardens of the Western Ghats. In Kerala it is called kudampuli, and in English it is often sold as Malabar tamarind.
It is a close cousin of kokum, which is used along the Konkan coast. Long before it appeared in supplements, kudampuli was a kitchen staple. This guide covers what it is, how it has traditionally been used and where it features in our formulas.
What is garcinia cambogia?
The fruit ripens from green to yellow. Its rind is cut into segments, sun-dried and often smoked over a wood fire until it turns almost black. The dried rind keeps for a long time and is soaked before cooking.
- Malayalam: kudampuli
- English: Malabar tamarind, fish tamarind, brindleberry
- Also known as: gambooge
- Botanical name: Garcinia gummi-gutta, earlier listed as Garcinia cambogia
A staple of Kerala kitchens
Kudampuli gives Kerala's fish curries their deep, smoky sourness. A few pieces are soaked in warm water and simmered in the curry, adding tang in place of tamarind or tomato. It is also used along the coast of Karnataka.
Garcinia in Ayurveda and folk tradition
Sour fruits of the Garcinia family have long been part of regional food traditions in South and West India. In Ayurveda, the sour taste, amla rasa, is traditionally associated with appetite and with agni, the concept of digestive fire. Kudampuli's use has been largely culinary rather than as a standalone herb.

Questions people ask
In Kerala, garcinia cambogia is called kudampuli in Malayalam, and in English it is sold as Malabar tamarind or fish tamarind. It is often confused with kokum, a related fruit used along the Konkan coast. Both belong to the Garcinia family and are used as souring agents, but they are different species.
Kudampuli is a souring agent, most famously in Kerala fish curry. The dried, smoked rind is rinsed, soaked in warm water and simmered in the curry, giving a deep, slightly smoky tang. It can stand in for tamarind in some coastal recipes. Store the dried pieces in an airtight jar away from moisture.
Traditionally, garcinia cambogia is a souring fruit in Kerala and coastal Karnataka kitchens. Today it also appears in supplements, which are often marketed with weight claims; we do not make such claims for it or for any of our formulas. For personal advice on diet or body weight, speak to a doctor or dietitian.
Avoid garcinia supplements during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless a doctor advises otherwise. If you take regular medication, have a liver or other health condition, or are simply unsure, consult a doctor or qualified Ayurvedic practitioner first.
